The Right Partner
Happy 12th Anniversary to us! Twelve years ago, we said “I do.” We have gone through so much and I truly love Mitch more than I did on our wedding day. I am grateful for my COVID quarantine buddy. I am appreciative of how Mitch was willing to journey with me, no matter where the military sent us. Tonight, in our 6th year in Kuwait, we stay in with Mitch’s world famous popcorn. Sharing this pic from more adventurous times in Madrid, Spain; commemorated by Thu Wedekind with her excellent photography. Our chill night gives me a chance to reflect on how important it is to choose the right partner.
When I was a lieutenant, I remember lamenting to my cousin Emily how I didn’t think I could find someone compatible with my military career. She looked at me like I was crazy and told me there were plenty of careers; writers, web designers, etc., not connected to a brick and mortar office. That conversation planted the seed of possibility I was not previously considering. Had I continued with my previous mindset I would have expected and likely attracted guys that did not align with my path. That opened my eyes, yet there was still more to it.
Sheryl Sandberg in Lean In said it best:
“When looking for a life partner, my advice to women is date all of them: the bad boys, the cool boys, the commitment-phobic boys, the crazy boys. But do not marry them. The things that make the bad boys sexy do not make them good husbands. When it comes time to settle down, find someone who wants an equal partner. Someone who thinks women should be smart, opinionated and ambitious. Someone who values fairness and expects or, even better, wants to do his share in the home. These men exist and, trust me, over time, nothing is sexier.”
I hereby validate those wise words! This book did not exist when I met Mitch, somehow I sensed this 10 years before publishing when I met him and I can absolutely attest these to be true. I recommend the same to any woman looking for a true partner. He is the best match for me in so many ways. He is an amazing and inspiring human being and loves me in spite of my quirks. He supports all of my antics, and I have no idea what I would do without him during this retirement transition. Now 12 years later and who knows how many days into quarantine, I am thrilled we chose each other.
